New Endodontist to Central Oregon – Dr. Ryan Martin
Dr. Ryan Martin, DMD is a native of Tucson, Arizona. He graduated from the University of Arizona with honors with a Bachelor of Science. Afterwards, he attended Oregon Health and Science University School of Dentistry where he again graduated with honors. Following dental school, Dr. Martin was a dentist in the United States Navy Dental Corps. In the Navy he completed a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency while serving in San Diego. His next duty assignment took him to Okinawa, Japan where he was the Division Officer of the Camp Hansen Dental Clinic. Dr. Martin’s final Navy assignment led him to Fallon, Nevada. There he was the Department Head of the Naval Air Station Fallon Dental Clinic (home of TOPGUN). Following his service in the military, Dr. Martin was fortunate to have the opportunity to return to Oregon for an additional two years of specialty training and completed his postgraduate residency program in Endodontology at OHSU.
Dr. Martin is a board-eligible endodontist and an active member of the American Dental Association, American Association of Endodontists. He has a passion for the process of mastery through education, self evaluation, and consistency. His favorite parts about being an endodontist are being able to provide relief for patients on some of their worst days, and being able to help patients retain healthy functional dentition. Dr. Martin practices the full scope of endodontic treatment, utilizing surgical operating microscopes and advanced microsurgical techniques. The office is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment including: high resolution CBCT, the most modern materials available, and technology proven to improve treatment outcomes. Dr. Martin, his wife Chelsy, and their four children are happy to be making Bend their forever home! They chose it because it combines their love for the PNW, with the blue skies he grew up with in the deserts of Arizona. Dr. Martin looks forward to the opportunity to work together with patients and providers as a resource for exceptional endodontic care.

New Orthodontist at Struble Orthodontics
Dear Colleagues,
Struble Orthodontics is thrilled to announce the addition of a new provider to our practice, Dr. Jacqueline Gambee! Jacque brings with her an excitement to have a lasting impact on the patients in our community. She will be stepping in to help provide continued excellent care as Dr. Erica Crosta has decided to move to the Eugene area to be closer to family. After six excellent years, we are sad to say goodbye to Erica but wish her and her family an excellent next chapter. She will be missed and wanted you all to know what a pleasure it has been to work with each one of you.
Jacque was born and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona and attended the University of Arizona for her undergraduate studies. Upon graduation, she moved to Oregon and earned her Doctorate of Dental Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University. Following dental school, she completed a General Practice Residency and worked for three years as a general dentist before continuing her education to become an Orthodontist. She finished her Master of Science in dentistry with a certificate in Orthodontics at the University of Colorado. She is a perfect fit for our practice, our patients and our team and we can’t wait to introduce you to her soon!

Jacque and her husband, Leif, have two young children and are fulfilling a dream they shared during dental school to become part of the Central Oregon community and to enjoy all of the outdoor amazingness the area has to offer. She is excited to officially join our team.
Please call our office if you have any questions, or would like to have an opportunity to meet Jacque.
Sincerely,
Blair Struble, DMD, MSD and Madeline Peterson, DDS, MS

Tolerance is Killing Our Once Great Society Mehdi Salari
One of my best buddies said something to me recently that I cannot stop thinking about. We were walking the streets of Portland, the once beautiful and vibrant city that we both lived in during school and were sadly looking at the boarded up businesses, rows of tents, garbage, drugs, alcohol and mentally ill or depraved people sitting, walking or sleeping on the sidewalks and streets of Portland.
My classmate told me he was quoting Aristotle and said, “Tolerance is the last virtue of a dying society.” I looked up the quote later and it is indeed attributed to Aristotle.
I could see it with my own eyes that parts of Portland (as well as parts of other once great American cities) are indeed dying for the lack of a better word. People and families are moving away … businesses are closing … theft, crime, drugs, alcohol and mental illness are rampant on the streets … there aren’t any children running around or playing … remaining stores or businesses have had to resort to Security Officers and cameras throughout their stores to deter criminal activity and protect their employees and patrons … businesses can’t find people who are willing to work in those areas … people who live in apartments or houses in those areas have metal bars on their ground level windows and security codes and big locks on their doors … you can’t really safely or predictably leave or park your car on the street overnight … law enforcement simply does not have the capacity to keep up or address all the different calls that come in. It just isn’t safe, fun, practical or affordable to live or go to those parts of town anymore.
What’s happening in our bigger cities is also happening in our smaller cities and suburbs as well. Actually … it’s not happening everywhere … but it is definitely more prevalent in places where the local politicians are preaching and advocating tolerance, acceptance, privilege, racism, equity and continued and unlimited public funds, resources and tolerance for this lifestyle and community. There are cities and communities where we still have some basic rules and laws which people follow and law enforcement is capable of enforcing; but the politicians who run those cities and communities are constantly being attacked by the media and liberal politicians with woke ideology and philosophy.
I was hoping someone could tell me what we are getting or have gotten for the money we’ve spent on the so called homeless problem so far? Has any of the public money that local politicians continued to pour into their so-called solutions solved or reduced the problem? What I can plainly see with my two eyes and ears are that the cities and areas that are TOLERATING the problem, and spending the most money and allocating the most resources on the problem are the areas that attract even more people expecting or wanting the housing, services and funds. The money, resources and tolerance has not solved the problem, it has only made the problem bigger and worse for the communities that have enabled, funded and allowed this behavior.
Bend is following in Portland’s footsteps and building more and more facilities or encampments to accommodate a population which has not shown the willingness, aptitude or integrity to put back into society, what it is taking out. Society and civilization thrives when citizens work together toward a common good or goal. Society or civilization dies when individuals take advantage of the goodness of their kind-hearted neighbors.
I’m all for giving a helping hand, but I don’t believe enabling is giving someone a helping hand. I really don’t know if enabling is a natural instinct or behavior, or if it is practiced by any life form on earth. Birds don’t build a nest for other birds to live in. Birds don’t forage or hunt for food for other birds. Lions either hunt alone for their food or they share in what the entire pride brings down. Lions don’t carry or bring food to those who refuse to hunt or help the pride. Fish live in schools and search for food and attain safety in numbers; they don’t gather food and then bring it or put it in front of those who refuse to swim with the other fish in search of food. Rabbits, squirrels, raccoons, deer, eagles, coyotes, name any creature you want … spend each and every day defending their territory and foraging or working for food. I don’t mean to sound inhumane or cruel, I’m merely making the obvious observation that I can’t think of a creature that brings food or shelter for adult members of its society. Every creature does know how and does indeed bring food, and provide shelter for its young; but as soon as that youngster has learned to fly or run on its own … it is the responsibility and obligation of that creature to fend and provide for itself.
Another great quote that paraphrases what I’m trying to say is the paradox of tolerance, which says that if a society is tolerant without limits, its ability to remain free and tolerant will eventually be taken away or destroyed by those who are intolerant. Tolerance is a virtue preached by all religions and great philosophers, but no religion or great philosopher recommends tolerating corruption, crime, substance abuse, filth and those who are unwilling to abide by the basic laws, morals, ethics and rules of society.
It breaks my heart to see the once beautiful city of Portland so fragmented into regions which tolerate homelessness and regions which do not tolerate it. Politicians repeatedly advocate for equity, privilege and the need for society to be tolerant and accepting of everyone; regardless of any individual’s respect or tolerance for others in the community. There is a continuous and ever growing call for more taxpayer funding and support for enabling individuals to continue doing whatever they want, wherever they want and whenever they want.
I too want to help those less fortunate or experiencing homelessness; but I hope I’m not alone in my opposition to woke liberal ideals which are destroying our businesses, cities and communities. We can’t tolerate activities or brand them as normal, when it’s driving normal people away from certain parts of town. It breaks my heart to see parts of Bend following in the footsteps of Portland and tolerating a population and lifestyle which is choking out and killing small businesses and communities.

May 2023
Dear Dr. Rupert,
My Father-in-Law is a fantastic Dentist! He has a successful practice and has been practicing for 35+ years. He has graciously taken care of our entire family’s dental needs and our kids don’t have any cavities. He has never charged us a penny for any of our dental needs. In recent years, he has replaced several of my failing fillings and fixed a couple of my broken molars. My teeth feel and chew great.
Unfortunately … and I hate to complain … I hate all the gold restorations he has placed in my mouth. I don’t like the gold on my molars when I smile and wish I had white crowns, which are not noticeable or show when I smile. I understand the value and benefits of gold, but I just don’t like the way it looks.
I don’t want to be ungrateful or unappreciative of all the work my Father-In-Law has done for us. Do you have any ideas on how I can get a smile that I can be happy with?
Signed, Don’t Like My Gold Crowns

Dear Don’t Like My Gold Crowns,
Well … this is a fine mess you’ve gotten yourself into! There is absolutely no way you can insult your Father-in-Law by telling him that you don’t like the perfectly fitting and perfectly chewing gold restorations which he has worked so hard to place in your mouth for free. You will go straight to hell for breaking his heart, if you insult his gold restorations.
The only logical and practical way that I can see for you to get the smile makeover and tooth-colored restorations that you want is for you to file for divorce from your husband and move to a different state. Part of the divorce settlement will also hopefully get you the needed funds and money to replace all the gold restorations that you don’t like.
It will of course be hard on the kids, the family and everyone; but once you’re in a different state and don’t have to interact or see any of your current family members, the emotional pain will start to subside and you’ll find new shallow friends who are into their looks and themselves a lot more than their beloved family and you’ll quickly fit right in. Southern California will be a great fit for you.
I’m sure with your new smile; you’ll be able to hook up with a new partner who is attracted to your new and younger look, but not necessarily to the person you are on the inside. There are a ton of online services for hooking up with other singles your own age, who are into their looks more than they are into a lasting, giving, trusting relationship with someone that loves and cares for them unconditionally for life.
Glad I could help,
Dr. Rupert
